Position Overview
The Operation Manager is responsible for the leadership, management, and performance of the day-to-day operations of the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant. This role ensures the plant operates safely, reliably, and efficiently while meeting operational, regulatory, and environmental objectives.
The Operation Manager provides direct supervision and strategic direction to the operations team, ensuring seamless coordination between shifts, maintenance, and engineering functions. As the senior operational authority on-site, the role drives continuous improvement, operational excellence, and process optimization while fostering a strong safety culture and developing a high-performing, engaged workforce. The position also acts as a key interface with the Plant Manager, grid operators, regulators, and other internal and external stakeholders on operational matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of daily plant operations to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power generation in line with business objectives and grid requirements as well as establish and implement best practices, operational standards, and procedures to optimize plant availability, efficiency, and output.
- Monitor and analyse operational performance in real-time, implementing corrective and preventive actions to address performance gaps and oversee operational aspects of maintenance planning and execution to maximise asset reliability and plant availability.
- Ensure effective coordination between operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to minimize unplanned outages and downtime, as well as drive continuous improvement initiatives in operational procedures and condition-based monitoring practices.
- Ensure full compliance with all regulatory, environmental, and HSE requirements during plant operations, including local authorities and corporate standards. Champion a strong safety culture by embedding HSE leadership within the operations team, conducting regular audits, and participating in incident investigations.
- Ensure environmental performance targets are met during operations, including emissions of control and waste management as well as support the development, management, and control of plant budgets, operating costs, and capital expenditures as they relate to operations.
- Monitor operational financial performance, KPIs, and cost efficiency, ensuring alignment with business plans and performance targets, as well as contribute to long-term strategic planning, including asset upgrades, capacity improvements, and operational risk management.
- Mentor, and develop operations personnel to build a competent, motivated, and high-performing workforce as well as implement structured training programs, competency development, succession planning, and performance management systems within the operations team.
- Act as the primary point of contact for operational matters with corporate management, grid operators, regulators, contractors, OEMs, and other key stakeholders and ensure effective communication and alignment with internal and external parties to support operational and strategic objectives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering from a recognized institution. Professional engineering certification (e.g., IR, PE, CEng) is an advantage.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in power generation operations, preferably in CCGT plants, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role overseeing plant operations.
- Proven track record in managing CCGT plant operations, performance optimization, and team leadership. Demonstrated experience in large-scale industrial operations with a strong focus on safety, reliability, and efficiency.
- Comprehensive knowledge of CCGT systems including gas turbines, steam turbines, HRSG, and control systems and strong understanding of operational procedures, regulatory compliance, environmental standards, and industry best practices.
- Experience in performance monitoring, data analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong leadership, team coordination, and decision-making capabilities. Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills. Solid understanding of operational budgeting, cost control, and performance management. Proven ability to lead, develop, and retain high-performing operational teams.
Additional Certifications (Advantageous)
- Training or certification in Operational Excellence, Energy Management, or HSE Leadership.
- Certifications such as NEBOSH, OSHA, or equivalent professional qualifications.
