Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Head, CCUS Management to join our Sarawak Resource Management team. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage activities, with a proven track record of delivering results in fast-paced, global and cross-functional teams. This includes managing research, project execution, policy advocacy, and the development of carbon management technologies in accordance with both local and global environmental standards.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Planning:
  • Lead the development and implementation of the overall CCUS strategy for Sarawak, ensuring alignment with the state’s broader sustainability and resource management objectives.
  • Integrate CCUS initiatives into business and economic development frameworks, promoting sustainable growth.
  1. Storage Site Evaluation and Development:
  • Identify potential storage sites and subsequently lead and guide the technical team in storage potential estimation, risk identification and development of derisking plans inclusive of data acquisition strategies. 
  • Engage technical experts to perform reservoir characterization, including petrophysical analysis and fluid flow modelling, to assess storage capacity and containment integrity, along with wells and facilities integrity assessment.
  • Able to rank and prioritize storage sites in alignment with PETROS and Sarawak's sustainability and economic growth aspirations, while overseeing the planning and development plan execution of these sites.
  • Lead subsurface team to develop and apply advanced CCUS subsurface modelling to simulate CO2 injection, storage, and monitoring processes with specific focus on containment and conformance.
  • Ensure high-quality standards and deliverables of technical work across all phases of project execution, while promoting efficiency and risk mitigation.
  1. Technical Analysis & Recommendations:
  • Understand in detail technical aspects of storage sites, including storage potential, characteristics, integrity and associated risks .
  • Review and analyse subsurface geological and engineering data to offer reliable technical assessments and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Apply industry standards and best practices (such as SRMS) to ensure compliance with carbon storage resource reporting.
  • Provide expert advice on injection site and reservoir management strategies, injection optimization, and long-term monitoring and verification.
  • Evaluate relevant technologies associated with MMV and accordingly provide technical recommendation for implementation.
  • Support commercial teams in assessing the commercial viability of storage sites.
  1. Project Support & Collaboration:
  • Work closely with geologists, geophysicists, and other engineers to integrate subsurface data and enhance subsurface models and overall site development plan.
  • Lead and manage Stage Gate Reviews while actively participating in multidisciplinary project reviews, offering insights and solutions to complex CCUS related challenges covering both surface and subsurface
  • Support the development and execution of CCUS projects, ensuring alignment with company objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all requirements in SSA and SDA are executed timely and efficiently
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff and subordinates.
  • Collaborate with Head of Liaison to support PETROS’ carbon storage investment strategies, identifying and prioritizing investment-worthy storage sites to attract investors focused on decarbonization.
  1. Regulatory & Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Liaise with state authorities and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and guidelines.
  • Provide technical support during regulatory submissions, including permit applications and environmental impact assessments.
  • Represent the company in meetings with external stakeholders, including government agencies and industry partners.
  • Manage relationships with developer and operator of storage site throughout project execution including post closure phase.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in petroleum engineering, or a related field. A PhD or MBA is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in upstream oil and gas field development with more than 8 years of experience in reservoir engineering although disciplines shall be considered. Having CCUS experience would be an added advantage.
  • Expertise in subsurface software (e.g., Eclipse, CMG, Petrel RE, PETEX) and other relevant tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks and industry standards related to CCUS would be a plus.
  • Having held leadership roles and commercial experience would be highly valued.
