Position Overview:


The Gas Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and inspection of Sarawak’s gas distribution infrastructure. This role is integral to delivering operational excellence across the Sarawak Gas Distribution Operation & Maintenance portfolio. The Gas Technician will serve as a certified Gas Competent Person, supervise site activities, support team performance, and lead emergency response efforts as needed. The role demands strong HSSE leadership and the ability to coordinate effectively with stakeholders, contractors, and in-house teams.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Demonstrate and promote HSSE leadership across all activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
  • Enforce safety procedures and actively participate in safety briefings, audits, and risk assessments.
  • Foster a culture of safety and accountability among team members and contractors.
  • Serve as the authorized Gas Competent Person for Sarawak Gas Distribution.
  • Oversee the commissioning, operations, and maintenance of Class II–III gas systems, ensuring adherence to technical and safety standards.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and compliance with relevant gas regulations.
  • Represent the IOM Supervisor or Project Engineer during joint site inspections and supervisory roles.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring seamless coordination during site visits and audits.
  • Lead in-house technicians, contractor crews, and third-party vendors for scheduled and unscheduled operational and maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure all activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with operational plans and schedules.
  • Act as the Emergency Response Team (ERT) Lead on a rotational basis as part of the O&M duty roster.
  • Coordinate emergency response efforts during gas incidents, ensuring rapid and effective mitigation and communication.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching and mentoring to technicians.
  • Support skill development, training programs, and knowledge transfer to enhance team capability and performance.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

 

  • A minimum of a Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Gas Technology, or other relevant technical certifications), with at least 5 years of experience in operations or maintenance.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of industrial facilities, oil & gas installations, or utility assets (e.g., gas distribution, power generation, or water supply systems).
  • Practical knowledge and application of Preventive Maintenance (PM), Predictive Maintenance (PdM), and Corrective Maintenance (CM) methodologies.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or technical leadership role, with experience leading field teams or coordinating with contractors.
  • Possession of a Certified Gas Fitter Class III competency (or higher) is an added advantage.
  • Familiarity with Malaysian gas regulations and permit-to-work (PTW) systems.
  • Ability to interpret and work with engineering drawings and layouts. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, ProEngineer, or similar tools is a plus.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), such as SAP or IBM Maximo (MASSIMO), including job planning, scheduling, and asset tracking.
  • Prior exposure to utility service operations—particularly in gas, power generation, or water—is an advantage.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking, with a focus on practical and safe solutions.
  • A collaborative team player who contributes to team success and is capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with contractors, vendors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Creative, proactive, and adaptable to changing operational needs, with readiness to take on emergency response responsibilities when required.
